Biography of David Lamar
David Lamar grew up in the Pleasure Point area of Santa Cruz, which is a major surfing area of Santa Cruz California.
From an early age (8 years old) he was part of that surfing community. He began playing classical and flamenco guitar at age 12.He didn't play steel string or electric guitar until he was 20.
During those formative years he moved to Los Angeles Ca. and studied jazz with Joe Pass, voice with Elizabeth Walberg and Harmony and theory with Bert Wilson. At the same time getting a bit of work as a session player mostly in the folk and country fields. Besides the above mentioned he was heavily influenced by players such as James Burton, BB King, Grant Green, and Kenny Burell among others.
Leaving L.A. at age 26, he began a 25 year odysseyof traveling and working outside of the U.S.A. working as a back-up guitarist and session player in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico and many other countries in Western Europe.
In 1986 he began working as an artist under his own name doing exclusively the songs he writes. He has toured for many years with the Arts America Program, and The National Endowment of the Arts Program for the U.S. Government playing all over South America and Europe. With them he has toured both as an artist and a lecturer of modern harmony, and has lectured at such places as the Pernanboco State Conservatory of Music in Recife Brazil and the State Conservatory of Music in LaPaz Bolivia among other places.
He has been teaching privately for many years and many of his former students have found success in their own right. Both Guitar and singing students.
He has written the book "Chordal Harmony and Soloing" which will be available soon.
The last few years he has been touring throughout Europe and recently returned from a 4 month tour of Argentina. He moved back to Santa Cruz at the end of 2000 to concentrate on the U.S. market. He has 2 albums out in Europe "The Swedish Sessions" recorded in 1997 and the "live from Europe" album recorded in Upper Silesia in Poland.
